Ticker Tape Parades

I’ve been lazy this Sunday, laid up all day watching a NASA documentary chronicling the space program from Mercury through present day. It was so cool to see American’s lining the streets to welcome home heroes back then that it got me thinking… when was our last ticker tape parade? Candidates in the upcoming election More »

A Long Road to the White House

The race is on. Romney is in first and everyone else is in dead last. How disingenuous is that? Here we have one of, if not, the most liberal presidents ever in office and the best the “conservative” Republican party can do is offer a moderate. Whatever happened to true conservatism? Ticker Tape Parades

I’ve been lazy this Sunday, laid up all day watching a NASA documentary chronicling the space program from Mercury through present day. It was so cool to see American’s lining the streets to welcome home heroes back then that it got me thinking… when was our last ticker tape parade? Candidates in the upcoming election need to recognize America’s need for heroes. Let’s light some candles and keep sending men to space. Our mail carrying system has both a private and government sector, why can’t the space program? Burt Rutan (designer and builder of Space Ship One) and other entrepreneurs shouldn’t be the sole providers of trips to space; the public needs to contribute too.

The Truth

Gingrich has the education, experience, and enthusiasm to be a good president. Romney has the charisma, presence, and money to get elected. The truth is  I don’t know if I care too much for either of them. The truth is that we will never get the type of people we need in office.

We need men and women in that are compassionate about the needs of the American people. At the same time, we need folks in our government who know about business, diplomacy, and law. The truth is that very few individuals have both the heart and knowledge to be good leaders.

Right now America is facing a pivotal moment, and we are in desperate need of a great leader. The average leader rides on the back of his constituents. A great leader lifts up his people, asks them to work harder, gives them goals to strive for, and builds dreams worth fighting for. President Kennedy, for all his faults, was quite good at fostering dreams. The space program, our trips to the moon, and his charismatic speeches created a sense of direction that helped people feel like there was something out there greater than any individual; that we were all working toward something of intrinsic value.

In watching these last few debates I’ve decided these things to be the truth: That Newt Gingrich has charisma, passion, and the ability to create a fantastic vision for us. Romney has the look, or presence if you will, to stand in front of the people and lead. That being said, it is my contention that what out country needs right now is both Romney and Gingrich. I Think Gingrich has the perfect blend of bullishness and experience to be an active vice president, and Romney is the picturesque family man we can be comfortable having in the Oval Office. A dual ticket would significantly increase the Republicans’ likelihood of securing the White House, and it would be a great victory for America if they got elected as a unit!!

I have something to say too

The Republican candidates were here in Jacksonville, Fl the other night and I was more than a little frustrated that I wasn’t able to get my hands on a ticket to the debate. Then I got to thinking about it and decided that I rather speak my mind than listen right now anyway!

Our country is on the verge of collapse. Barrack Obama has run our deficit up to over 15 trillion dollars in three years! When he took office our deficit was only 10 trillion. He has worsened our financial situation by 50% in less than one term! How does that happen? He can’t even use the bailouts, something George W. Bush started, as an excuse because a large portion of those programs were initiated before he got into office.

Unbelievable. That is the best word i can come up with. Incomprehensible. Unfathomable. Historically speaking this has been the most devastating three years of America since the commencement of the Civil War. I think America’s political elite are so thoroughly convinced that we, the citizens, are so stupid that we can’t figure out that they are wagging the dog. Right now I don’t care if our president is pro-life or anti-abortion. At the moment I don’t give a darn if our next president made 1 million or 100 million last year. The American public needs to wake up and realize that we need a fundamental change in direction.

First and foremost, we need a flat tax. For every dollar earned, by any individual or business, the tax rate should be 15% (about the same amount Romney was liable for on his earnings). It shouldn’t matter if you make 1o,00o a year or 50,000,000. For every dollar an American person or business earns it should cost a set amount. No more “loopholes”, no more tax breaks; just a set taxation of 15% on every dollar.

As it stands, the only people being adversely affected by our current tax code are the middle and upper middle class. Under our current tax code, only about half of America’s population has any federal income tax liability. Many folks make too little to “owe” anything under our graduated system, and some make so much that they can protect their income by channeling it through the right investments, coming up with write-offs, or hiding their money off shore. Romney makes so much freaking money that he can’t even tell you how much he has or where it is. Yet, hard working and successful individuals (at least by my measure) are stuck paying 35% of every dollar they make. It doesn’t make any sense.

Why should people be punished for being in the upper-middle class? Why should people be rewarded for being broke? Why should individuals like Mitt Romney pay 20% less than others who made over 19 million dollars less than him in the same year? Why? Because America is corrupt. I hate to say it but the people who create policy put their interests in front of the well being of America and her people. Their idea of fair is to keep taxes low on the upper 1/2 percent, have the bottom 40% pay nothing, and tax the shit out of the rest of us. It’s crazy, it’s unfair, and it is absolutely wrong. Mitt, if I had it my way everyone would pay exactly the same percentage as you. But as it is, folks making 100,000 per year pay 35%, while people like you who are loaded, and bottom feeders like me who barely eat (literally),  pay much much less.

I say, “No freaking more.” No more bullshit tax brackets. No more avoiding the realities we live with. America needs a lot of work and the people at the top, for the most part, don’t care. They are in it for their own benefit. They don’t care that most Americans barely survive. They don’t care that folks who are moderately successful get shafted. All they care about is their money and what is afforded by their position. Money got them there. The power keeps them there. And the position gives them more of both.

Sweet Success

Another productive night on the web-front! I need to give a huge thanks to my cousin for the site being where it is today! There is a ton of work ahead, but just a few short months ago this site was nothing more than a domain name. Google Adsense is up and running now!!! Also started a Facebook page for “The Nonpartisan Alliance”, though I will have to fill in the info on it later. Along with a great day at work I’m very pleased at the upgrades to the site as well. I appreciate feedback but I’ll apologize ahead of time if your comment doesn’t make it through the spam filter… me. There are over 10,000 pending comments and sifting through to find the good ones is time consuming!

Thanks to everyone who isn’t trying to advertise garbage on my site and actually has something to say!! As I get the structure the way I want it more articles will follow!!

Also, check out the forum. Just shoot me an email at tcardenwebb@yahoo.com if you want to be a forum administrator. I’d love to see some good dialogue on there!

I’m considering a new theme, so the site might look different next weekend. Give me feedback to let me know if I should make some changes or keep it the same.

Thanks for visiting and enjoy! I’ve edited about half the posts, so maybe a couple are actually coherent now :)

An Update on the Project

Hey folks ,

Just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who’s been visiting the site. I can’t tell you how much all the positive feedback has meant!

Unfortunately I have had a terribly hard time trying to understand how to setup the RSS feed, so if anyone know how to do that I sure would appreciate some help! Further, Google Adsense is also giving me on heck of a time.

So, stay tuned for the RSS feed, and any help with that or Google Adsense would be appreciated more than I can express before my laptop battery dies!!

Congrats to Newt Gingrich for winning the South Carolina primary; if I hadn’t been so busy with failed attempts at setting up my RSS feed and ads I would have a write up on that by now.

It looks like we’re going to have one heck of a race this year… I just hope work and technical problems with the site don’t keep me from putting in my 2 cents :)

The Dialogue Disconnect

Is it possible to listen, or are we too busy trying to craft our response to the next question to listen to others? Is it just me, or are we more divided as a country, more separated as a population than previously considered possible? I love my country. I believe in the Constitution as it was originally drafted, and understand the points argued by the Federalist Papers. Why are we so polarized today?

Barack Obama was likened to Abraham Lincoln during the 2008 election, and ironically the country hasn’t been this divided since the Civil War. It’s not white against black, free against inslaved; it’s those who want to work and believe in earning a wage, against those who want to be given something for nothing.

At present, I’m right about at the poverty line. Between student loans, a car payment, health insurance, keeping a means of communication, and a little food, I’m tapped out. I grew up in the middle class, maybe even upper middle class, but I’ve had to work my way out of poverty just like every one else. Do I enjoy getting up at 7am everyday, working 8-10 hours, and making just enough to survive to the next paycheck so I can do it all over again? No.

My hypothesis is this: We spend so much of our energy trying to figure out the next thing to say, even in the most basic of conversations, that we fail to listen. While the Democrat is talking the Republican is crafting. While the conservative is convincing the liberal is… you get the point. When are we going to say enough is enough? When are we going to have the opportunity to pursue our own destiny again? I’m going to strive to not be the person who lets another good idea fall on deaf ears, will you offer the same in return?

Ctrl+P

Today I was trying to assist a client in obtaining a document. I spent over 30 minutes on the phone with a “Customer Service Representative” from the company who, well, had the document. The CSR had virtually no customer service skills and while I begged, pleaded, and eventually expressed a high level of frustration to this unwilling individual (who only needed to push CTRL+P) I started to reflect on the fact that we, as individuals, presently have almost no control over anything.

Our micro-managed style of work lives has led to a situation where virtually no one has any authority to do anything. Parents don’t have the authority to choose how they raise their children, teachers don’t have the right to educate the way they see fit, the guy on the phone is instructed to say no 6 times before he passes you off to a supervisor, and on and on we go.

The most frustrating thing is that most of us don’t even have the right to do our flipping job. We live in a world of hierarchies and permissions, and I’ll be honest with you, I’m tired of it.

I want to be able to say what I need to say, do what I need to do, and shouldn’t have to spend a half an hour on the phone with someone who has to go through X number of objections before he is aloud to speak with his supervisor. What’s wrong with the world today?

Why can’t we get paid to actually think and do something? Is that too radical to fathom, for people to actually have a role and the ability to function in said role? We need to create a world of problem solvers and doers or we will never be successful again. Why should we be tasked with creating objections. Aren’t you tired of having your hands tied behind your back?

I don’t know about you but I think individual responsibility is vital and accountability is paramount. All I needed was a guy to say “okay” and print one document and he couldn’t do it. I had to get confrontational and ask for a manager four times before it finally got done. That isn’t fair to me, that isn’t fair to the CSR I was speaking with, and it definitely wasn’t fair to our mutual client. What do we have to do to get back on the right track?

All I needed was one person to press CTRL+P, but he was controlled by too much bureaucratic BS to perform a simple task. It’s almost like his job was to do nothing and prevent others from being productive. How does that make sense??

More than suprised

Mr. Gingrich, you have served America and her interest tirelessly for longer than I have been alive. I might not agree with you on every issue, but you have character and speak from your heart. Congratulations on your standing ovation. As you revitalize your campaign and gain momentum on Romney, be confident that people will rally around you. After all, weren’t you the 1995 “Times Man of the Year”?

What we need…

What we need in the 2012 president elect isn’t a politician. We need a statesman who is attentive to the needs of America and her people. I don’t care how smooth our next president talks or how fantastically he or she can craft a response during a debate. The fiber of the man or woman in charge is what defines the direction of our country. Are we to be a nation guided by a tyrant who’s inability to listen eventually destroys us, or are we to elect an individual who is eager to serve the needs of his constituents? Intellectual capacity plays no small part in one’s presidential viability, but are one’s ethical and moral standard just as, if not more, important? I would argue, unequivocally and emphatically, yes. Let’s vote for the guy who spends more time on the campaign trail listening than speaking. Furthermore, would it not be prudent to vote for the individual who cares more about result than legacy?

Faith, Jack Daniels, and Will Rogers

In case you haven’t been watching the news, the economy is wrecked. The good news is the whole world is in turmoil, not just the United States (sarcasm). As soldiers fight the Taliban and Al Qaeda in Afghanistan, citizens back home fight to keep the bills paid and food on the table. Our American empire is on the verge of collapse. Our government is requesting a multi-trillion dollar increase in the limit of the national deficit in a feeble effort to keep the lights on in Congress.

Nights like tonight make me think back on the Great Depression. Nights like tonight make me wish we still had Will Rogers. Roger’s charismatic charms soothed the souls of an entire nation, during a decade I didn’t know, where my ancestors, folks who were far greater than myself struggled, and eventually persevered.

What’s it going to take to bring our generation out of financial disarray? To that question I have few answers. But, in the mean time, while think tanks around the world try to solve problems far too large for a feeble mind such as my own to grasp, I’ll try to find faith in a better day, swig a shot of Jack Daniels, and read a couple one liners by Will Rogers.
